Tinkering Program

This program will take place at UIC and will give 20 undergraduate college students hands-on experience in programming and designing projects using Arduino micro-controllers and Raspberry Pi micro-computers.


MRDC - Robotics Team

For this project the team is working to design and build a robot that will go into the Midwest Robotic Design Competition(MRDC). The robot needs to accomplish a list of tasks throughout the competition. Examples of these tasks are: pull a rope downwards, pick up a ball, holding a door etc. The team is in charge of putting together mechanical, electrical and coding aspects of the robot to make the best performance at the competition.

Automated Foam Dart Sentry Turret

For this project we are are redesigning an automated nerf gun. This system detects the presence of movement in any indoor office-sized room that it is deployed in and launches foam darts in the direction where the intrusion was detected. We will use pcb design, microcontrollers, and programming to make a functional gun turret.

The purpose of a greenhouse is to control the growing environment. Plants require a limited range of temperature, soil moisture, light, humidity, air (Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen), and nutrients to grow. Plants also require some type of physical support for roots and shoots.  Plants also depend upon symbiotic relationships with fungi and insects to grow and reproduce. The greenhouse covering helps control many of these factors to help increase plant growth and reproduction.

Gates-to-System Computer

Do you want to build a computer?  We’re making one using the deepest, darkest secrets that Apple and Intel don’t want you to know!  Based on Nisan and Schocken’s The Elements of Computing Systems, we’ll be learning about and simulating a complete hardware architecture and software platform, from the tiniest electrical signals to the grand game of Tetris.  Meanwhile, we’ll also being turning it real by programming a specialized FPGA board to wire it up just like the way the computer industry prototypes our products today!  This project requires a laptop for those looking to contribute or follow along on their own
